Econsult Botswana was established in 2005 by Dr Keith Jefferis, a former academic and Deputy Governor of the Bank of Botswana.

Econsult works in Botswana, the Southern African region and further afield, and specializes in research, economic commentary and policy-related analysis in a variety of fields.

Managing Director – Dr Keith Jefferis

Keith Jefferis is development macroeconomist and financial sector specialist. He is currently Managing Director of Econsult Botswana, a consultancy firm specialising in economic and financial sector development in Botswana, throughout Africa and internationally. From June 2020 to May 2023 he worked as Senior Policy Advisor in the Botswana Ministry of Finance, which involved advising the Minister and senior officials on a wide range of economic, fiscal and financial policy issues. He was Deputy Governor of the Bank of Botswana, the central bank, from 1999-2005, with responsibilities covering monetary and exchange rate policy, payments system development, reserve management, and liaison with Government on policy issues. He has worked as an economic consultant on assignments in many countries in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean, and has worked for international organisations such as the World Bank, the African Development Bank, USAID, SADC, UNIDO and UNDP as well as governments and central banks in various countries. He has served on boards of various financial and non-financial entities in Botswana, Kenya, Mauritius and Nigeria.

Dr Jefferis has extensive research and academic experience in the field of economics. He is particularly committed to capacity building for young economists and improving the quality of policy analysis. He is originally from the UK and started his professional career as a Fellow of the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) working as an economist in Swaziland. He has lived in Botswana since 1989 and is a naturalised Botswana citizen.
