Diamonds weigh on Botswana's trade balance

Trade balance in July 2016 was a deficit of P175.9 million from the revised surplus of P2,627.7 million in June 2016. Imports were valued at P5,277.7 million in July 2016 reflecting a 10.1% decrease from P5,871.1 million recorded in June 2016. During the period, imports of Diamonds and Fuel declined by 10.6% and 41.2% respectively. On the other hand, exports decreased significantly by 40.0% in July 2016 from P8,498.8 in June 2016 million to P5,101.9 million. This is mainly attributable to the decrease in Diamond exports which fell by 42.0% from P7,539.0 million in June 2016 to P4,373.0 million in July 2016. Also, Copper & Nickel droped 48.1% from P301.2 million to P156.4 million during the period under consideration.
